Hello, fella Farmers

I look forward to the upcoming reunion and reconnecting with many of our WRHS classmates.  As I said in my 2006 bio, “I’m always happy to be in a group where I am not the oldest person in the room.”

Retirement has turned out to be a pretty sweet deal for Steve and me.  Here are a few revelations I’ve experienced since hitting the mid-sixties:

-Pro:  Medicare has been a pretty decent deal thus far.  Con:  The docs tend to write me off when I tell them my age.

-Pro:  Retirement is a great time to travel.  Con:  Traveling the way I like to travel now costs a bucket load more than it did when we were young.

-Pro: Reading the paper and sipping coffee in the morning uninterrupted is glorious.  Con: I just wish I could read the print even with magnifying glasses.

-Pro: Our two children are off the ‘pay roll’.  Con:  However it feels, at times, like they are still on the ‘pay roll.’  And, Steve wishes, many times, a day that I were off the ‘pay roll.’

-Pro: Grand parenting is the best role ever!  Con:  Grandkids can be pretty expensive!

-Pro: It’s nice to sit and enjoy a leisurely dinner at a restaurant.  Con: Having to stand up again without bringing attention to myself.

Here’s my life in a nutshell…….

Marriage:

Steve and I have been married for 44 years—CU sweethearts.  I have convinced him that we continue to have a blissful relationship.  He bought it.  He still refers to himself as my ‘trophy husband.’  I don’t buy that.

Work:

Steve retired from the Gates Rubber Co. (Gates Corp.) as VP of their auto aftermarket.  My most enjoyable stint in the workforce was as coordinator/teacher of the Gifted and Talented Program at an elementary school in Arvada.  The students inspired me more than I inspired them!

Family:

We have two grown children—both are married, happy, healthy, and self-sufficient. That makes for very happy parents. Our daughter has a handsome seven year old boy and an adorable two year old girl.  Our son has just become a new father…she’s a cutie, of course. They were both wise to stay in the Denver area making it easy for the gullible grandparents to be on the babysitting scene in a heartbeat.  Am I the only one who marvels at the energy young parents have—could that have been me at one time?   Where or where is that vital girl of yesteryear?  Now, it’s tough duty to tend to those young ones, but we love doing it even with the aches and pains of a maturing body.

Retirement:

Retirement has been a lively time for us.  I thought I’d go into withdrawal after the kids left the nest especially having been so involved in their school and sports activities, but it took no time at all to acclimate.  Our days are filled from morning to night with various and sundry activities.  And, yes, I do enjoy an evening glass of wine---especially on the deck in the summer. Mundane stuff but fun.   Traveling has also been a big part of our retired years. We have been fortunate to take advantage of many a fine vacation.  Hawaii is our favorite as well as a trip or two to watch the CU Buffs play away. I have a very blessed life for which I am very grateful.

Enough already!  Hope this finds you all as healthy and spirited as you were in high school.

September, 2006

•Graduated from CU (Go Buffs!) with a degree in Sociology. Lotta good that did me. Should have listened to my father and pursued a Business Degree.

•Worked many years as an Associate Buyer for Fashion Bar (anybody remember shopping at FB??) It disappeared a long time ago which is yet another indicator of my age.

•Been married to Steve for 34 years. I call it marital bliss—Steve’s not so inclined to agree. He often refers to himself as Dianne’s Trophy Husband.

•Our moves have been from Boulder to Arvada—don’t have much gypsy in our genes.

•Stayed home to be with 2 great kiddos. I guess they’re worth a mention since we’ve invested so much time and money in them. Maegen is 26, married, and a graduate from CSU (the turn coat!). Ryan recently turned 21 which was a five day celebration culminating in a family celebration in Hawaii. He’s currently a Junior at CU (I guess he wants to stay in the family will. Again, Go Buffs!)

•While Maegen and Ryan were still in school, I joined the work force as the coordinator and teacher for Gifted and Talented students at the elementary level. Those kids were light years ahead of me—not a great confidence booster I might add. I did have a kick working with these bright young minds even though they showed me up at every opportunity. I’m convinced to this day that one or more of my ex-students will be internationally acclaimed and famous and will credit me with his/her success.

•Most of my time was spent volunteering at the schools my children attended from elementary to high school. Steve continually argued that more money went out the door in my volunteer capacity than he was able to bring home.

•Now, much to Steve’s chagrin, I’m hanging around the house helping to plan high school reunions while listening to him grumble that he can’t yet retire. But, I have to keep the boy working so I can reap the benefit of traveling with him on business trips. I only pick the exotic spots, by the way. Who knows, now that I have access to all your out-of-state addresses, I may end up on your door step some day. We still enjoy a good day on the slopes (although I’m not so much a fan of cold, brutal weather—pretty selective in my old age.)

•REFLECTION: As I grow older, I realize gravity is not my friend!

I look forward to the reunion and being in a group where I’m not the oldest one in the room! I can’t wait to see you all.
